As of now I just use my social networking sites as way to connect with friends and family, along with...well I'll just say it creeping (who doesn't creep). As it turns out our future employers also tend to "check up" on their future employees AKA creep. So what does one do when looking for a job and going through the interview process?
As I go through my college career I have noticed that a lot of my friends who go out and party changed their Facebook name to something confusing, involving reversing their first and last names or something like that so that when they are applying for that dream job that picture of them doing a keg stand doesn't pop up when doing a google search. All in all this seems pretty smart but not the best way to handle the situation. Personally, I also make an effort to not let any alcohol be seen in any of my pictures because I don't want to give the wrong impression. Sure we all do these things but realistically it's not what any of my future employers want to see when considering me.
After reading these articles another thing that I have considered is using social media as a way to promote myself professionally. I have been giving a lot of thought to my future and I potentially want to be the owner of a daycare/ open my own child care business. Using Facebook and other sites is a great way to spread the word about things like this.
We all have to be really careful these days. The websites all say the same thing, they tell us that our information is all private, our pictures can not be seen if we don't allow them to, nor can our comments on things. This is all crap. If an employer or even some potential date wants to find out more about you its just a google search away from being possible, so I suggest double thinking posting that picture of you with a bottle of vodka.
